Content and campaigns with people and purpose at heart
Hi, I’m Charlotte - a freelance writer and communications specialist.
Let me help bring your story to life.
Problems I can help you solve
“We want more people to care about what we have to say”
As a former journalist, I know how to get to the heart of a story. I can help you bridge the gap between what you want to say and what your audience really cares about, creating people and purpose-led stories that move them to take action.
"We've got so much to do but no real plan for a way forward"
A great comms plan sets you free to make amazing things happen. I will work with you to understand what you want to achieve and how, and create a clear, easy-to-follow marketing communications plan to bring it all together. (I can also run it for you, if you like).
“We have lots to say, but too many ways of saying it”
I can help you find one clear voice that feels true to your brand and show your teams how to use it with confidence. I can build simple, practical tools that make it easy for everyone to speak consistently about what you do.
“We can’t afford permanent marketing support but we need help now”
Not every team has the time or budget to hire permanent staff, but comms work still needs to get done. If you need an extra pair of hands to keep a campaign moving, build up content, support an event, or simply take a few things off your plate, I can help.
“We want people to trust our expertise”
Your people are your greatest asset. I can help you showcase their insight and experience through engaging thought leadership and social content that shows your audience why they should trust you.
“We’re all too close to this content - we need a fresh pair of eyes on it”
A fresh perspective can make all the difference. Whether it’s editing, proofreading, or sense-checking what you’ve written, I can help you get it into better shape and ready to share.

Portfolio
I’ve worked with fantastic charities, public sector, and B2B organisations, including War Child, ZN Consulting, Cambridge Enterprise, Treehouse Innovation, Healthwatch England, Accenture, Scientia Scripta, Nesta, Nutcracker Agency, Partnership for Economic Policy, Newtrade Media, and more. Here are some highlights from projects I’ve worked on.
Thought leadership and blogs
I’ve written blogs and thought leadership articles on a wide range of subjects - from smart home technology and innovation to maternal mental health and cancer. I’ve been commissioned to articulate expert insight from senior leaders at organisations including global consultancies and healthcare brands, among others.
No matter the brief, my focus is always on understanding what the audience cares about, and how we can frame that to inform, engage and inspire action.
Examples include:
this ‘Designers can change the world’ series based on expert interviews at Treehouse Innovation.
this post for Mumernity about motherhood and loneliness.
numerous posts on my own blog - here’s one of my favourites.
Social media
I have managed and grown social media presence for brands and senior leaders across global beverage and healthcare brands, innovation, public affairs, sustainability, mental health, and more. I have done everything from creating content plans, writing posts, securing approvals, liaising with designers to create assets, posting and responding to engagement, and evaluating reach.
Reports and long form content
As well as short, sharp content, I also love diving into in-depth report writing, editing and proofreading. I’ve worked on reports and long-form content designed to stimulate debate, encourage policy change, and showcase expert research and analysis.
I love collaborating with subject matter experts, crafting executive summaries on behalf of leaders, and partnering with designers and printers to bring content to life on the page.
Examples include:
Copywriting, design management and proofreading for this Healthwatch England annual report.
Copyediting and proofreading this report on maternal mental health.
Copyediting and proofreading reports for Nesta and Partnership for Economic Policy.
Case studies
I’ve written case studies for corporate, charity, and B2B organisations. While the stories differ, my approach always stays the same: I find the most compelling angle, get to know the audience and what matters to them, and create content that’s easy and engaging to read.
Examples include:
numerous case studies showcasing Treehouse Innovation’s work with clients like Sony Playstation and ITAB.
Healthwatch England’s report ‘Safely home’, for which I helped write and edit stories of people’s experiences of leaving hospital and care settings.
Journalism
I have a journalism degree and have taken my love of storytelling into every role I’ve had. I’ve been commissioned as a freelance journalist to write about a wide range of topics - from wedding photography to mental health, food wholesaling to marriage proposal mishaps.
I love getting to the heart of a story and interviewing people from all walks of life. I take deadlines and word counts extremely seriously, and bring a professional, reliable approach, as well as strong editorial judgement.
Examples include:
Executive PA - Mental health - not to be ignored
Broadly - People share their weird reactions to marriage proposals
Better Wholesaling - Soft drinks trends: How to make your sales pop
Tone of voice and messaging
I’m especially passionate about helping organisations figure out how they want to sound. Once that’s clear, communications become more natural, cohesive, and fun to create.
I was responsible for developing a tone of voice for Healthwatch England and Treehouse Innovation while working in-house. This involved building a deep understanding of each organisation, consulting with senior leadership and wider teams, creating clear, practical tools and resources, training teams, and then leading integration of each tone of voice across channels.
Each time, having this clear tone of voice helped us to create clearer content, strengthen engagement with audiences and grow reach.
What people say about me
“Charlotte is a top-tier copywriter who knows exactly how to get a reaction from an audience. She is a highly skilled writer, incredibly responsive, and easy to collaborate with. Charlotte played a key role in the success of our ad campaign; the goal was a quick response from our target market, and she delivered exactly that. Highly recommended for any brand looking to level up their messaging!”
Angela Souza, Project Manager, ZN Consulting
“Charlotte was in my team at Healthwatch England and was an absolute dream to work with. Smart, motivated, highly skilled, hard-working and lovely. She's an excellent storyteller, and brought a huge amount of professionalism to our communications team - creating compelling campaign content for a variety of different channels on a range of different issues. She combined this with excellent strategic thinking and planning skills, as well as being a cool head in a crisis.”
Kathy Peach, Director of the Centre for Collective Intelligence Design at Nesta
"Charlotte can take the vaguest of briefs (“can you sprinkle some comms magic?”) and turn it into sharp, engaging copy that inspires action and somehow says exactly what you meant all along. She’s brilliant under pressure and still manages to deliver thoughtful, beautifully written work, no matter how tight the deadline.”
Sarah Rodricks, Head of Group Communications, Spirit Health
“I had the pleasure of working with Charlotte at Healthwatch and can honestly say she is one of the most talented communications professionals I’ve worked with. Charlotte has a rare ability to combine strategic thinking with exceptional writing and communications / campaign execution. She brought exactly the right level of challenge, always thoughtful, constructive and rooted in a deep understanding of audience, objective, messaging and strategic purpose. She helped sharpen our thinking, strengthen our external communications presence, and ensured everything the communications team produced was clear, human and impactful - and crucially on brand.”
Ceri Gautama, Communications Consultant and Strategist
“She is without doubt one of the most capable, skilled and committed people I have worked with in my career and there’s no one I would want more in my corner during a crisis.”
Jacob Lant, CEO, National Voices
About me
I’ve worked in communications throughout my career, clocking up almost 20 years across the public sector, charities, and B2B. I have a journalism degree, which led to a brief early-career stint at a local newspaper that cemented my love of storytelling for life.
I live in south east London with my husband, Leon, and our two children, in a house we’ve had to rip apart from top to bottom - so, for the record, I will never be moving again.
Aside from all the writing I do for work, I also write a personal blog about motherhood, marriage, and muddling through. So if you want to know what my tone of voice sounds like, my Substack, While I’ve got you is the place to go.
I genuinely love the work I do. It makes me so happy to help organisations present the best versions of themselves to the world.
If you’d like to chat about how we could work together, I’d love to hear from you.
